PREAKNESS REFORMED CHURCH

WAYNE, NEW JERSEY

EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

August 4, 2019    10:00 A.M.

Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“…this Psalm reminds us that those who orient their lives

toward the ways of God and the kingdom of God will face hardships.

The good news, however, is that those hardships are not lasting,

but the strength of God is: from age to age."

Eric Mathis, Professor of Music and Worship at Samford University

  • CALL TO WORSHIP                                  Psalm 119 and 19, selected verses

How sweet are God’s words taste on our tongues,

sweeter than honey to our mouths! We gain understanding from God’s precepts.

The heavens declare God’s grandeur and the radiance from which they arise.

Each dawn tells of God’s beauty; each night shines with God’s grace.

Their testimony speaks to the whole world and reaches the ends of the earth!

God’s love is radiant, rejoicing the heart, more precious than the finest gold.

Let us worship the Lord our God, a rock and a shelter every day of our lives.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION                        Psalm 51, adapted by Stephen Mitchell

Forgive me, Lord, in your mercy; in your great love blot out my sin.

Lighten the weight of my offense; free my mind from its burden.

I am deeply conscious of my guilt.

My heart is breaking with remorse and the shame of what I have done.

Teach me to live in wholeness.

Cleanse my spirit; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Take away my guilt; wipe out every last trace of my sin.

      Return me to myself.

Create a pure heart within me; let my soul wake up in your light.

Open me to your presence; flood me with your holy spirit.

Then I will stand and sing out the power of your forgiveness.

Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
