Welcome to the Preakness Reformed Church!

“Prayer does not mean simply to pour out one’s heart. It means rather to find the way to God and to speak with him, whether the heart is full or empty. No man can do that by himself. For that he needs Jesus Christ.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible

  • Congregation standing, as able

Bold Text is spoken in unison by the congregation

PRELUDE                        Brother                             B&B Rinehart

THE RINGING OF THE BELL

Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,  you who lead Joseph like a flock.
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth!

Awaken your might! Wake up your power! Come and save us!

     Psalm 80:1,2

Lord, you have been our dwelling place  throughout all generations.
Before the mountains were born, before you brought forth the whole world,

from “once upon a time” to “kingdom come,”

from everlasting to everlasting --- you are God.                                              Psalm 90:1,2

To you I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens!
Our eyes look toward the Lord our God, until God shows us his mercy.

       Psalm 123:1

Let us give thanks to you, Lord, with our whole heart;
Let us tell of all your wonderful deeds.
We will be glad and rejoice in You;
We will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
                                     Psalm 9:1,2

  • OPENING SONG Trust in You Lauren Daigle   (page 5)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION                              verses from selected Psalms

Turn to me, God, and have mercy on me because I’m alone and suffering.
My heart’s troubles keep getting bigger —
set me free from my distress!
Look at my suffering and trouble —
  forgive all my sins!

Why are you hiding your face, forgetting our misery and oppression?

Why are you sleeping, Lord?  Rise up!

Why do you stand so far away, Lord?

Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

I say to God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me?”

How long will I be left to my own wits, agony filling my heart? Daily?

How long must I endure trouble?

How long will sorrow fill my heart day and night?

How long will my enemy keep defeating me?

Why must I walk about mournfully because of the oppression of the enemy

God, have you abandoned us forever?

How long will you hide your face from me? Why do you pull your hand back?
Why do you hold your strong hand close to your chest?

Has your faithful love come to a complete end?

Is your promise over for future generations?

But I, O Lord, cry out to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you.
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?

But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered.

(silent prayers of confession)

The peace of Christ be with you!

And also with you!

(Please share a sign of peace if you are able.)

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever.  Amen.

Trust in You                                                           Lauren Daigle

Letting go of every single dream
I lay each one down at Your feet
Every moment of my wandering
Never changes what You see

I tried to win this war
I confess, my hands are weary, I need Your rest
Mighty warrior, king of the fight
No matter what I face You're by my side

When You don't move the mountains
I'm needing You to move
When You don't part the waters
I wish I could walk through
When You don't give the answers
As I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You

Truth is, You know what tomorrow brings
There's not a day ahead You have not seen
So let all things be my life and breath
I want what You want Lord and nothing less

You are my strength and comfort
You are my steady hand
You are my firm foundation
The rock on which I stand
Your ways are always higher
Your plans are always good
There's not a place where I'll go
You've not already stood

I will trust in You
I will trust in You
I will trust in You

Unpack Your Heart                                                                    Phillip Phillips

Meet me where the sunlight ends
Meet me where the truth never bends
Bring all that you're scared to defend

And lay it down when you walk through my door
Throw all of it out on the floor
Your sorrow, your beauty, your war
I want it all, I want it all

Bring your secrets, bring your scars
Bring your glory, all you are
Bring your daylight, bring your dark
Share your silence
And unpack your heart

Show me something the rest never see
Give me all that you hope to receive
Your deepest regret dies with me

The days when you stumble and fall
The days when you grind to a crawl
The treasure that hides behind your walls
I want it all, yeah I want it all

Oh, I'm on your side
So shed your shadow
And watch it rise (REPEAT)

Into your darkness
I'll shine a light

Bring your secrets, bring your scars
Bring your glory, all you are
Bring your daylight, bring your dark
Share your silence,

Bring your honor, bring your shame
All your madness, I will tame
Won't you lay down, down your guard
Share your silence
And unpack your heart

Hills and Valleys                                                                        Tauren Wells

I've walked among the shadows
You wiped my tears away
And I've felt the pain of heartbreak
And I've seen the brighter days
And I've prayed prayers to heaven, from my lowest place
And I have held the blessings
God, you give and take away

No matter what I have, Your grace is enough
No matter where I am, I'm standing in Your love

On the mountains, I will bow my life
To the one who set me there
In the valley, I will lift my eyes to the one who sees me there
When I'm standing on the mountain I, didn't get there on my own
When I'm walking through the valley I, know I am not alone!
You're God of the hills and valleys
Hills and valleys
God of the hills and valleys
And I am not alone

I've watched my dreams get broken, In you I hope again
No matter what I know, I'm safe inside Your hand

Father, you give and take away
Every joy and every pain
Through it all you will remain
Over it all (REPEAT)

On the mountains, I will bow my life

In the valley I will lift my eyes

You're God of the hills and valleys
Hills and valleys
God of the hills and valleys
And I am not alone
